The human eye works much like a camera. Light enters through the lens in the front of the eye and focuses on a thin layer of light-sensitive tissue at the back called the retina. The retina contains special cells that convert light into signals. These signals travel through the optic nerve to the brain, which helps us see clear images.

A healthy retina is essential for clear vision. Any damage to the retina or optic nerve can cause blurred vision, distorted images, or even permanent vision loss.

At Mr. Opticals, we believe early detection and regular eye check-ups are the key to protecting your vision. Here are 10 common retinal disorders you should be aware of.

1. Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) affects the center of the retina called the macula. It usually occurs in people over 60 years old.

Symptoms:

  • Blurred central vision

  • Dark or blind spot in the center

  • Difficulty reading or recognizing faces

2. Diabetic Eye Disease

Diabetic Retinopathy is caused by diabetes damaging the blood vessels in the retina. It may also lead to Diabetic Macular Edema.

Symptoms:

  • Blurred vision

  • Floaters

  • Vision loss in severe cases

3. Retinal Tears

A retinal tear is a small break in the retina.

Symptoms:

  • Sudden floaters

  • Flashing lights

  • Sudden blurry vision

Early treatment can prevent further complications.

4. Retinal Detachment

Retinal Detachment occurs when the retina separates from the back of the eye. This is a medical emergency.

Symptoms:

  • Curtain-like shadow over vision

  • Sudden vision loss

  • Flashes and floaters

Immediate treatment is necessary to save vision.

5. Macular Edema

Macular Edema occurs when fluid builds up under the macula, causing swelling.

Symptoms:

  • Blurred or wavy central vision

  • Faded colors

  • Sensitivity to bright light

6. Macular Hole

A Macular Hole is a small break in the center of the retina.

It commonly affects people over 60.

Symptoms:

  • Distorted central vision

  • Blurred reading vision

7. Retinal Vascular Occlusion

Retinal Vein Occlusion or artery blockage affects blood flow to the retina.

Symptoms:

  • Sudden blurred vision

  • Vision loss

  • Swelling in the retina

Without proper blood flow, retinal cells can die.

8. Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP)

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) affects premature babies with low birth weight.

Abnormal blood vessels grow in the retina and may cause scarring.

9. Retinitis Pigmentosa

Retinitis Pigmentosa is a genetic disorder affecting the light-sensitive cells.

Symptoms:

  • Night blindness

  • Loss of peripheral (side) vision

  • Tunnel vision

10. Retinoblastoma

Retinoblastoma is a rare but serious eye cancer seen in babies and young children.

Symptoms:

  • White reflection in the pupil

  • Crossed eyes

  • Vision problems

Early diagnosis can save both vision and life.

When Should You See an Eye Doctor?

If you notice:

  • Sudden vision changes

  • Floaters or flashing lights

  • Blurred or distorted vision

  • Loss of side vision

Seek immediate medical attention.

At Mr. Opticals, we recommend regular retina check-ups and comprehensive eye exams to detect problems early.
